nebular hypothesis

Definition

Astronomy

  • Theory that the Solar System condensed from the Solar nebula. This theory is now generally accepted, which is why objects like comets and meteorites are regarded as primitive material from the early days of the solar system and therefore of great significance to solar system studies. The nebular hypothesis is undergoing constant mathematical refinement to improve our knowledge of the processes which made the solar system adopt its present distribution of matter and energy.
