- In a magnet or magnetic body, one of the two regions where the magnetic lines of force converge, and hence magnetic intensity is at a maximum. The other region is the positive pole (1). Such a pole, when part of a magnet or magnetic body which is freely suspended, will seek a positive pole, as opposite poles attract. Also called south pole (3).
- The location in the southern hemisphere where the magnetic dip is 90°. The corresponding spot in the northern hemisphere is the positive pole (2). At each of these places, the magnetic meridians converge. The south magnetic pole does not coincide with the south geographic pole, and the position of both magnetic poles varies over time. Also called south pole (2), south magnetic pole, or magnetic south pole.
