nematic-crystal display

  • A passive matrix liquid crystal display in which nematic liquid crystals are twisted 90° or more. The glass sheets of the display contain the nematiccrystal material in a manner that they are twisted unless an electric field is applied. When such a field is applied selectively, the affected crystals untwist and become opaque, thus blocking the polarized light passing through, which in turn produces darker pixels. Such displays provide higher contrast and a better viewing angle than ordinary passive LCD screens, which is especially useful when used under highly-lighted circumstances. Used extensively in portable computers. Also known as twisted nematic display.
