  • Twisted and elongated crystals which align themselves longitudinally, but which are otherwise randomly positioned. Nematic liquid crystals have order in one dimension, while smectic liquid crystals have order in two. Used, for instance, in nematic-crystal displays. Also called nematic crystals, or twisted nematic liquid crystals.
