  • Widely-used catalogue of nebulae and galaxies published in 1888, and much more comprehensive than Messier’s. The NGC is an updated version of the General Catalogue begun by William Herschel and finished by his son John Herschel, and produced in its final form by Dreyer.The NGC includes about 2500 objects to Messier’s 109 and includes information about the southern hemisphere sky, based mainly on work by John Herschel in South Africa.
