- In a relay or switch, a contact pair that is open in the resting state, and which is closed when energized. The contact pair consists of a stationary contact and a movable contact. A normally-open contact provides a complete circuit when energized. This contrasts with a normally-closed contact, in which the contact pair is closed in the resting state. Its abbreviation is NO contact. Also called normally open, make contact, or front contact.
