Oberammergau Passion Play

  • The best-known surviving Passion Play. In 1633, as theBlack Death swept through Bavaria, the inhabitants of the village of Oberammergau vowed to enact the Passion of Christ every ten years ifthey were spared. This they have done ever since, with one or two exceptions. Although the play is now a highly organized commercial undertaking, the actors, musicians, and technical team are all still taken from the village. In recent decades there has been some controversy over the allegedly anti-Semitic overtones of the traditional text.
