  • A musical lampoon of World War I that was created by Joan Littlewood'sTheatre Workshop in 1963 at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. Theplay was a 'documentary collage' that juxtaposed sentimental songsof the period with poignant scenes and harrowing wartime photos projectedon a screen to create a powerful anti-war message. The work soon transferredto Paris and New York. Richard Attenborough's 1969 film version featuredan all-star cast that included Laurence Olivier, John Geilgud, RalphRichardson, Maggie Smith, and Vanessa Redgrave.
