  • The sunken area in front of a stage in which musicians perform.The orchestra pit was an innovation of the Georgian theater, musicianshaving sat aloft in a gallery in Elizabethan times and in a box inthe Restoration theater. The term (and, indeed, the use of the wordorchestra to mean a musical ensemble) derives from the space reservedfor the chorus in the ancient Greek theater.
