ozone layer

General English

General Science

  • noun the layer of ozone in the atmosphere between 20 and 50 km above the surface of the earth

  • Layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere which shields the Earth’s surface from ultraviolet radiation. The ozone layer is thicker and closer to sea level at low latitudes and thinner and higher nearer the Poles. Its depletion by human-made chemicals is currently being fought because of the effects of ultraviolet radiation on life, especially increased skin cancers.
