- (written as Pala)An Indian theatrical genre that honours the deity Satyapir,who is worshipped by Hindus in the eastern state of Orissa. Thereare two traditional styles of performance, one in which the actorsare seated and one in which they stand dressed in royal attire.
The Pala is performed in any suitable open space. Thechief player (who holds a yak's-tail fly whisk andplays small bell-metal cymbals), explains the songs in the audience'slocal language. Other players make up the chorus.
