• A piece of stage machinery consisting of a copper dome in whichsaints, angels, and other heavenly beings were raised and loweredover the stage. The device was invented by Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 - 1446)for the annual Annunciation play in Florence's church of San Felice.A group of choir boys, representing angels, and an actor playing thearchangel Gabriel were suspended in the paradiso and loweredby crane to a platform from which the actor recited his part beforebeing lifted back to heaven. The device remained in use until thelate 18th century.
