party line



  • An arrangement in which the telephones of two or more end users are connected to the same telephone line or local loop. When utilized, a mechanism such as selective ringing may be employed to distinguish for which user an incoming call is meant. Party lines are saddled by privacy and congestion problems. Also called multiparty line.
