• The so-called "science of impossible solutions"devised by the French playwright Alfred Jarry. Essentiallyan anticipation of surrealism and the Theatre of the Absurd,it is exemplified in Jarry's grotesque farce Ubu Roi (seePère Ubu). In homage to Jarry, a somewhatnotional 'College of 'Pataphysics' was founded in Paris in 1948 bya group of artists and writers. Its greatest honour, the title of'transcendent satrap', has been awarded to several luminaries of thetheater including Eugène Ionesco, Fernando Arrabal, and Dario Fo.
