peculiar galaxies

Definition

Astronomy

  • Galaxies which do not belong in any of the normal categories, spiral, barred spiral, elliptical or irregular. Some peculiar galaxies defy simple explanation, while others appear to be members of the usual galaxy types distorted by explosions and collisions. Those related to galaxy types in the Hubble classification are given the addendum (pec) to the Hubble type they most resemble.
