  • A beam of radiated energy, such as light, or particles, such as electrons, whose cross section is in the approximate shape of a circle with a comparatively small diameter. Such a beam is usually made parallel, or nearly parallel, through the use of one or more collimators. Used, for instance, in astronomy and radars. Also called pencil (1).
