  • Originally the mask worn by actors in the Roman theater (perhapsfrom per sonare, to sound through), and later the character orpersonage represented by the actor (as in dramatis personae). TheEnglish word 'person' came to mean any role, function, office, etc., assumedby someone; and hence an individual human being.
