  • Capacity reduction factor in structural design. The factor is expressed as a number less than 1.0 (usually 0.65-0.90) by which the strength of a structural member or element, in terms of load, moment, shear, or stress, is required to be multiplied in order to determine design strength or capacity. The magnitudeof the factor is stipulated in applicable codes and construction specifications for respective types of members and cross sections.
