  • A spectroscopic technique which provides an optical spectrum, especially infrared, based on the sounds produced when a sample is irradiated with light. A highly-sensitive microphone is utilized as the detector. Used, for instance, to analyze below the surface of opaque samples. Its abbreviation is PAS. Also spelled photo-acoustic spectroscopy.
