photoelasticity

Definition

Electronics

  • The change in certain optical properties of a material when subjected to mechanical stress. This occurs, for instance, in certain transparent dielectrics, and can result in birefringence. The varying of the plane of polarization of a light wave passing through such a material, as a function of the applied stress, is another example. Also spelled photo-elasticity. Also called photoelastic effect.
