Definition

Astronomy

  • The visible surface of the Sun, which has a temperature of some 6000K. The photosphere marks a comparatively sharp boundary between the solid body of the Sun and the solar atmosphere. Observations of the photosphere tell us only about the top few hundred kilometres of the Sun’s body. The term is also used for the visible surface of other stars.
