  • An electron tube incorporating a photosensitive electrode, usually a photocathode, from which electrons are emitted when exposed to electromagnetic radiation, especially light. The output signal of such a tube is proportional to the intensity of the incident light, and the photosensitive electrode may be chosen so as to selectively respond to specific regions of frequencies. Also spelled photo-tube. Also called photoelectric tube.
