  • A name for a clown or buffoon in the Dutch and German theater ofthe 17th and 18th centuries. A comic character of this name was first introduced,it appears, by one of the troupes of English Comedians who toured theContinent from the late 16th century. The first recorded use of of the term in English (as Pickleherring) is by Joseph Addison in The Spectator (1711). see also Hanswurst.
