  • noun a mean, tightfisted person; a welcher on a bet or a shirker. A now obsolescent word, related distantly to the British pikey, or from an abbreviation of ‘turnpike’, piker occurred in the writings of Raymond Chandler in the 1940s. It originally referred to the unreliability of vagrants or itinerants.
