pinyon pine

  • Pinus monophylla, P. cembroides, P. quadrifolia, P. edulis. A group of small pines, 20' to 40' in height, occurring in scattered groves in the semi-arid areas of the west. They produce an edible seed, mostly used as topping for salad. Trees exposed to constant winds take on a sprawling form. See also pinon pine, nut pine.
