planar process

Definition

Electronics

  • In the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the production of all components along a single plane, as opposed to three-dimensionally. It is a widely-utilized process in which an oxide layer is first grown on the substrate, followed by multiple steps of diffusion and etching to produce the desired junctions, and usually ending with another oxide layer for insulation, stability, and protection.
