  • The nickname given to the actor John Palmer (1742 - 98)by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, because of Palmer's fame asa liar. The son of a doorkeeper at Drury Lane, Palmer began his careeras a strolling player. He opened the Royalty Theatre in London in1787 but, as this was unlicensed (see licence), hewas soon arrested and made no further attempts at theater management.He died on stage in Liverpool (see dying words).
