  • The bright star Alpha Ursae Minoris, so-called because it is situated near the north celestial pole. Polaris is a Cepheid variable star which is notable for the rapid decline in its variability, which has a period of about four days. It varies now only by a visually imperceptible 0.01 magnitudes.
