  • The garrulous old courtier in Shakespeare's Hamlet,a pompous, sententious, interfering old man. He is the father of Opheliaand Laertes and lord chamberlain to Claudius, the usurping king ofDenmark. Taking him for Claudius, Hamlet stabs Polonius to death whilehe is hiding behind an arras to spy.
