  • A group of hydrocarbon-containing chlorine compounds that, before being banned as pollutants, were used in hundreds of industrial and commercial applications, including electrical and hydraulic equipment, sealants, rubber, paints, and plastics. PCBs are not readily biodegradable, and the United States stopped producing them in 1977.
