quadraphonic sound system

  • A sound system in which there are four channels, each feeding its own loudspeaker. It is meant to be an enhancement of two-channel stereo. When recording, the signals of the four channels are encoded into two channels, and when reproducing, the signals are decoded so as to provide the four original channels. Also called quadraphonic sound (1), quadraphony (1), or four-channel sound system.
