quantum well

  • A semiconductor heterostructure in which an extremely thin semiconductor layer with a narrower band-gap is surrounded by two layers with a wider bandgap. This allows charge carriers to move perpendicular to the direction of the crystal growth, but not in the same direction. A quantum well has one dimension, and is used, for instance, in transistors and semiconductor lasers.
