radiometric dating

  • An analytical technique in which the approximate age of an object or material is determined by the extent to which a given radioisotope has decayed. For instance, after death, tissue no longer absorbs carbon-14, so its remaining proportion present can estimate when such an organism died. Also called radioisotopic dating, radioactive dating, or radiogenic dating. It is called radiocarbon dating when carbon-14 is the radioisotope utilized.
