rain attenuation

  • The attenuation of a signal due to rain or atmospheric moisture, such as that contained in clouds. It is the extent to which the amplitude of a signal is reduced when passing through such a medium en route from a transmitter to a receiver, and is usually due to absorption and/or scattering. Rain attenuation is an important consideration in satellite communications. Also called rain losses, or rain loss.
