rare. O rare Ben Jonson

  • The inscription on the tomb of Ben Jonson, in thenorth nave aisle of Westminster Abbey (see Poets' Corner).According to the author John Aubrey, it was "done at the chargeof Jack Young (afterwards knighted), who, walking there when the gravewas covering, gave the fellow eighteenpence to cut it." 'Rare'in this case means unusual, remarkable. It has been suggested thatthe inscription was originally meant to read "Orare Ben Jonson",Latin for "Pray for Ben Jonson".
