  • noun a surface or underground train. The word has been used in Britain and the USA (where travelling hobos referred to ‘hopping a rattler’) since the 19th century. Until the late 1950s the London underground system was sometimes known to workmen as the Rattler.
  • noun a womaniser, seducer. It derives from the verb form rattle (someone), meaning to have sex with and, like that term, is heard mainly in Scotland.
