red supergiant

Definition

Astronomy

  • Red Giant of many solar masses, and subject to even more massive expansion that normal red giants. Such stars can swell to the size of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun or even larger. Betelgeuse in Orion is the best-known example. Red supergiants are so large that their average densities are very low, but they are among the brightest stars known.
