reflection high-energy electron diffraction

  • An electron diffraction technique in which a sample is bombarded with a beam of high-energy electrons which is directed at a very small angle, so as to graze said sample. The electrons are diffracted, and then detected by a phosphor screen on the other side of the electron gun. Utilized, for instance, to study the surface contours of samples, or to monitor the growth of epitaxial films. Its abbreviation is RHEED.
