request to send
- noun a signal used in an RS-232C serial port to control the flow of data from another device, e.g. a modem. When the computer is ready to receive more data, it sends a RTS signal to the modem that replies with a signal on the CTS pin of the RS-232C connector and then sends the next batch of data to the computer.
- In communications, a signal some devices send in order to secure permission to send a transmission. The appropriate response from the other station is clear to send. Its abbreviation is RTS.
