resonant cavity

  • An enclosure which is able to maintain an oscillating electromagnetic field when suitably excited. The geometry of the cavity determines the resonant frequency. Used, for instance, in lasers, klystrons, or magnetrons, or as a filter. Also known by various other names, including resonating cavity, resonant chamber, resonance cavity, rhumbatron, cavity (2), cavity resonator, microwave cavity, microwave resonance cavity, and waveguide resonator.
