• (Portuguese: revue) In Portugal, a type of satirical varietyentertainment, ranging from intimate sketches to small-scale musicals,performed in the large theaters of Lisbon. Fossilismo e progresso(Fossil-Worship and Progress; 1859) was the first of the annualrevista do ano (reviews of the year). Originally little morethan brief sketches lampooning politicians and royalty, by the early20th century they usually had a plot (often drawn from mythology)and employed an orchestra and chorus line. The satire was often virulent.The revista gained in popularity and respect under the dictatorshipof Salazar (1932 - 68), despite repressive censorship that reducedthe number of new offerings from 122 in the 1930s to 68 in the 1960s.
