  • the only DOCa region of Spain, in the north of the country, that produces some of the country’s best red wines, as well as some whites and rosés (rosados). The region is divided into the three areas of La Rioja Alavesa, La Rioja Alta and La Rioja Baja, of which La Rioja Alta generally produces the best-quality wines. The region grows mostly Tempranillo and some Grenache (Garnacha) grapes to produce the red and rosé wines and Macabeo (Viura) grapes to produce the white wines.
