Robert (Oxton) Bolt
- (1924 - 95) British dramatist and screenwriter, who firstachieved success with his play Flowering Cherry (1957), starringRalph Richardson and Celia Johnson, which ran for over 400 performancesat the Haymarket. Bolt's reputation was confirmed with the successof A Man for All Seasons (1960), dealing with the life anddeath of Sir Thomas More. Later works included Vivat! Vivat Regina!(1970), which concerns the relationship between Elizabeth I and MaryQueen of Scots, and State of Revolution (1977). Bolt also wrotea number of works for children (including The Thwarting of BaronBolligrew, 1966) and several screenplays for the film directorDavid Lean. In his later years he wrote little, having been severelydisabled by a stroke. He was married (twice) to the actress SarahMiles (1941 - ).
