rookie

Definitions

General English

Slang

  • noun a learner, neophyte or newcomer, particularly to a job or a sports team. The term originated in Britain in the armed forces of the late 19th century, but more recently rookie has been in more widespread use in the USA. The word is said to be a deformation of ‘recruit’, perhaps influenced by the noisy chattering of rooks.
