- noun an oilseed crop (Carthamus tinctorius) grown mainly in India. The oil is used in the manufacture of margarine, and the residual oilseed cake has a limited use as a livestock feed.
Food
- A thistle-like plant, Carthamus tinctorius, with large orange-red flowers, cultivated in India, China and the Middle East. The flowers are used as a yellow colouring and oil is extracted from the seeds. The styles are sometimes sold as true saffron to unsuspecting customers.
