• The heroine of Kalidasa's great Sanskrit drama Abhijnanasakuntala(5th century AD). The daughter of a sage, Viswamita, anda water nymph, Menaka, she is brought up by a hermit. King Dushyantavisits the hermitage and persuades her to marry him: later, howeverhe returns to his throne, leaving her a ring as a gift. Sakuntalabears a son, Bharata, and sets out with him to find his father. Onthe way she loses the ring, and the king fails to recognize her. Thering is subsequently found by a fisherman, the king recognizes hiswife and she is publicly proclaimed his queen. Bharata becomes thefounder of the glorious race of the Bharatus. Sir William Jones (1746 - 94)translated the drama into English.
