sampling rate

Definitions

Computing

  • noun a number of measurements of a signal recorded every second
  • noun a number of measurements of a signal that are recorded every second. A PC sound card normally supports one of the following three standard rates: 11,025, 22,050 and 44,100 samples per second, normally written as 11.025KHz, 22.05KHz and 44.1KHz.

Electronics

  • In analog to digital conversions, the frequency with which samples of a variable are taken. For instance, that used in the conversion of analog music into digital form. Usually expressed as samples or cycles per unit time, as in a 192 kHz sampling rate. Sampling must be made at or above the Nyquist rate to prevent aliasing, and for any given sample size, the higher the sampling rate the more accurate the conversion. Also called sample rate, sampling frequency, or conversion rate.
