It is grown widely, particularly in central and southern Italy, and produces red wine that is high in acid and tannin and can be used to make a range of different styles of wine, from fresh, light, young wines to full-bodied reds. It is best-known as the main grape used in the Chianti red wines (where it is called Sangioveto). Some Sangiovese is now also grown in California, US.
