  • In the 17th-century commedia dell'arte, one of theservant characters or Zanni. Traditionally dressedin green and white, Scapino was a quick-witted rogue who, true tohis name (which means 'run off'), would flee at the first sign ofreal danger. The role was created by the Italian actor Francesco Gabrielli(1588 - 1654) and ultimately evolved into Scapin, thecunning and unprincipled character of the Comédie-Italienne.Scapin is the principal character in Molière's Les Fourberiesde Scapin (1671).
