Scaramuccia or Scaramouche

Definition

Theater

  • One of the stock characters of the commedia dell'arte and Comédie-Italienne. Scaramuccia was effectively the creation of Tiberio Fiorillo (1604 - 94), who combined elements of two stock characters: the boastful soldier Il Capitano and the scheming servant. Fiorello played the part in a plain black costume with no mask and a guitar. The character's military origins are reflected in his name, scaramuccia being Spanish for 'skirmish'.
